Big Red won the Mercer County Championship last month and, between May 17-19, took the Leibovit Cup vs. Peddie, captured the Crooked Stick vs. Hill, and earned the NJISAA Prep A title (for the first time since 2006). After a 0-2 start, the boys finished at 6-3-1.
Etienne Bilodeau, head coach of the boys’ varsity golf squad, said the spring has been “tremendous fun [and] accomplished in a season where there was so much parity in the MAPL.”
One of the season’s many highlights, according to Bilodeau, was the team’s match against Hun on May 5. Big Red posted what he called “an unbelievable” score of 187 (with the top five or six players scoring). Third Formers Jimmy DeCillo and Adrian Jordan shot under par scores (35 and 32, respectively) at TPC Jasna Polana for what the coach thinks may be an all-time team low. Another high point for Lawrenceville, said Bilodeau, was the team’s hard fought 18 holes match play format (8 vs 8) against Mercersburg on May 14, which ended in a tie despite playing extra holes. “This was a tie that very much felt like a win given that it was our first time playing a scenic course and a tricky back nine at Chambersburg Country Club,” said Bilodeau.
The coach added, “We are extremely proud of the citizenship and the leadership that all our players displayed this season. Special thanks and congratulations to our five Fifth Form varsity players; Ben Gubbay (Boca Raton, Fla), Harrison Berger (Syosset, N.Y.), Jack Saad (Fair Haven, N.J.), Andrew Lee (Seoul, Korea), and Alec Brown (La Jolla, Calif.).”
