Jordan Brown ’21
On April 7, the Big Red varsity softball team defeated Blair Academy 7-0 at home, breaking Lawrenceville’s nine game losing streak against Bucs. Highlights included a six strikeout performance by pitcher Sarah Zimmerman ‘23 in the last four innings of play, a sliding catch by Allison Haworth ‘22, and captain Jasmine Bright ‘21 hitting a double for an RBI, stealing third on a dropped ball, and scoring on the ensuing single. Jordan Brown ’21 spoke with Big Red captain Alyna Balewitz ‘21 to get her perspective on the game.
Jordan Brown: What do you think the team did well today?
Alyna Balewitz: I think the team did really well hitting and fielding today, working together and calling the ball, which is something we struggled with a lot during practice. A lot of our techniques really came together today, and by applying all of those techniques we broke our nine game losing streak against Blair. It was a really exciting game.
JB: Who do you think were the standout players for Lawrenceville today?
AB: Emma Kim ‘23 made some really great plays in right field, first time playing the outfield with us, and I think Mackenzie Bunnell ‘21 made a really nice play at second early on. Sarah Zimmerman ’23 did an amazing job pitching— so many strikeouts, really strong— she’s going to take us far this year.
JB: How did it feel to be back on the field after last year’s virtual season, especially now as a senior captain?
AB: This feels great, I remember all of our fun memories from sophomore year because junior year was cancelled. Some of our best memories are from softball spring break trips. But now we all get to come together, get to know each other, play together, it’s just a lot of fun being back on campus and playing softball again. It’s a huge component of who we are as people and as players, so it’s great to be back with everybody.
