Big Red Sports Network Girls’ Spring Track Preview

Jordan Brown ‘21

How is the girls’ track team preparing for the spring season? Sports reporter Jordan Brown ’21 sat down with Head Coach Erik Chaput to find out.

Jordan Brown: What do you think they team has learned from having both last spring and this winter’s seasons cancelled?
Erik Chaput: The loss of the 2020 spring season was certainly a big blow for the team. We were coming off a fantastic indoor track season with three championships to our credit (MAPL, Prep A and Mercer County) and we were certainly looking to carry that momentum forward.

JB: Being able to work with the students in the fall, what are some things that you felt you accomplished from those workouts?
EC:  I truly enjoyed having a chance to get out there with student-athletes this fall. We had a talented group of II formers on the team last year and it was wonderful to have a chance to work with them again. It was great to see our incredible pole vault squad working hard as well. The vaulters played a huge role in our success in championship meets. I also got a chance to work with our mid-distance veterans this fall, several of whom are looking to make a run at New Balance Outdoor Nationals in June.

JB: What are you looking forward to the most this spring with the outdoor season coming up quickly?
EC: I am truly looking forward to working with our four incredible captains – [Fifth Formers] Ije Achebe, Ava Conyer, Marcia Ojo, and [Fourth Former] Laila Ritter. These girls have helped to make my job here at Lawrenceville truly special. They are all veterans of the program and are dedicated to building a team culture and to seeing each and every athlete achieve success.
