Deon McLean ’21 Signs NCAA National Letter of Intent with U. Conn.

Lawrenceville School post-graduate Deon McLean signed an NCAA National Letter of Intent this morning with the University of Connecticut where he will join the men’s football program. He expects to compete at defensive back for the Huskies football program and to major in business. McLean will begin classes at UConn in January.

McLean, who graduated from Lawrence Township High School last June, captained the Cardinals varsity football team in 2019-20. He holds the school’s record for longest touchdown run from scrimmage (96 yards) and tied for most interceptions in the state (six) as a junior. Selected as Co-Defensive Player of the Year, McLean is a two-time West Jersey League All-Area Player and First Team Defensive Back selection.

“Deon is a high-character young man who has made a lot of good decisions in life to get himself to this point. He worked hard to become a successful student and standout athlete at Lawrence High School. Coming out of high school, he had some opportunities to play football at Division II schools, but was hoping to expand his academic and athletic options. He decided to do a post graduate year at Lawrenceville, and once he made that decision, his college options began to expand. He continued to improve himself athletically while finishing strong academically. He ended up with multiple Division I offers and ultimately accepted a full scholarship to UConn, where he will have a great four years,” said Lawrenceville School Head Football Coach Harry Flaherty. “While we were disappointed he did not get to suit up for the Big Red in a game, he showed in practice why he is a Division I recruit - his energy, athleticism, and competitive nature set him apart. I am more proud that Deon put in a strong effort to improve academically this fall and prepare himself for success at the university level. Wish we had him for another year!”
