Lawrenceville Squash Learns from Mental Conditioning Coach Becca Thomas

Brandon Cheng ‘22

Lawrenceville’s squash program welcomed a special guest speaker, Becca Thomas, a mental conditioning coach at IMG Academy, via Zoom on Feb 9, 2021.  IMG Academy specializes in sports training for both amateur and professional teams in Florida. Mental conditioning is the process of training mental skills in order to perform to your best no matter the circumstances.

Thomas helps student-athletes train their brain to work with them, rather than against them, during performance. She discussed mental toughness, an important concept on- and off the court. Mental toughness is learning how to cope with the demands of our environment through the practice of psychological skills training. The psychological skills we train to help us be successful in sport are just as essential in helping us manage our everyday lives, especially as we are finding ways to navigate COVID-19.

Thomas shared her perspectives on how to manage the current day-to-day stressors, while also helping students prepare for their eventual return to sport. She discussed four key components in developing mental toughness: stress management, goal setting, focus, and perspective. These components are essential for building mental toughness on the court and in our everyday lives off the court.

Thomas holds a master’s degree in kinesiology from Michigan State University (where she consulted with the Spartan’s men’s and women’s tennis teams) and a B.S. in sports management at Wingate University. She began at IMG Academy in June 2017 as a summer mental conditioning coach and, after graduating from Michigan State, became a full-time Assistant Mental Conditioning Coach. She works with tennis players at IMG Academy.
